What is a HELD Space™?

People often ask us:
What exactly is a HELD Space™?"
The simplest answer is this:
A HELD Space™ is a decompression space designed for rest, regulation, and connection, with access to trained Active Listeners.
While many organizations offer quiet rooms, wellness rooms, sensory spaces, or break areas, a HELD Space™ combines two essential elements:
An intentionally designed environment and access to human support.
Because sometimes what people need isn't just a quieter room.
Sometimes they need another person.
Someone who can listen without judgment.
Someone who can help them process a difficult moment.
Someone who can sit alongside them in overwhelm, uncertainty, stress, or emotional intensity.
That's where our Active Listeners come in.
Active Listeners are trained professionals with backgrounds in areas such as peer support, mental health, crisis response, accessibility, education, community care, and lived experience. Their role is not to provide therapy or counselling.
Their role is to help people feel seen, heard, understood, and supported.
Whether available on-site, during designated hours, or through other models of support, Active Listeners transform a decompression space from a room people can enter into a resource people can lean on.
Together, the space and the people create opportunities to:
Rest
Regulate
Recharge
Reflect
Reconnect
This is the key difference between a quiet room and a HELD Space™.
A quiet room provides space.
A HELD Space™ provides space and access to support.
We believe accessibility is more than physical.
It is emotional.
It is sensory.
It is relational.
And when people have both a supportive environment and access to compassionate human connection, they are more likely to participate fully, remain engaged, and experience a genuine sense of belonging.
Because safe spaces aren't just created.
They're {HELD}.
Bringing HELD Spaces™ to More Communities
A HELD Space™ is more than a room. It's an intentional environment for rest, regulation, and connection — with access to trained Active Listeners when people need support most.
Whether in workplaces, conferences, campuses, libraries, community centres, or coworking spaces, HELD Spaces™ help transform moments of overwhelm into opportunities for belonging.
At HELD Agency, we partner with organizations that want to build cultures of care: Not just through policies, but through spaces and people that make support visible and accessible.

It's emotional, sensory, and relational.
